Based on CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute) guidelines, the protective coating for the exposed concrete face of the bridge will be an integrated 4-coat system. The detailed specification for each coat is as follows:
1. First coat: Micaceous Iron Oxide Undercoat
* This coat will serve as the base coat and provide corrosion resistance to the concrete surface.
* Micaceous iron oxide is a type of anti-corrosive pigment that provides excellent barrier protection against environmental factors such as moisture, UV rays, and chemical exposure.
* The micaceous iron oxide undercoat will be applied evenly to the prepared concrete surface to achieve the desired thickness.
2. Second coat: Polyamide Primer
* This coat will act as an intermediate layer between the undercoat and finish coat, providing adhesion and durability.
* Polyamide primer is a type of epoxy-based primer that offers excellent adhesion to the substrate and enhances the overall performance of the coating system.
* The polyamide primer will be applied over the micaceous iron oxide undercoat in a uniform manner, following the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Third coat: Polyamide Finish Coat
* This coat will serve as the main protective layer, providing resistance to abrasion, chemicals, and weathering.
* Polyamide finish coat is a type of epoxy-based coating that offers high durability and long-term performance in harsh environments.
* The polyamide finish coat will be applied over the polyamide primer, ensuring complete coverage and thickness as per the manufacturer's recommendations.
4. Last coat: Aliphatic Acrylic Polyurethane Finish Coat (Bergerthane or similar paint)
* This coat will provide the final protective layer, enhancing the aesthetics and UV resistance of the coating system.
* Aliphatic acrylic polyurethane is a type of topcoat that offers excellent UV resistance, color retention, and gloss retention, making it suitable for outdoor applications.
* The aliphatic acrylic polyurethane finish coat will be applied over the polyamide finish coat, following the manufacturer's guidelines for application and curing.
It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions for each coat, including surface preparation, mixing ratios, application methods, and curing times, to ensure proper adhesion, durability, and performance of the protective coating system. Regular maintenance and inspection should also be carried out as per CECRI guidelines to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of the coating on the exposed concrete surface of the bridge.
